What is Dementia?
Dementia is an umbrella term for a group of progressive neurological conditions that impact the brain. These conditions affect memory, communication, reasoning, and the ability to carry out daily tasks. The most common types include:
Alzheimer’s disease – marked by gradual memory loss and confusion.
Vascular dementia – often following strokes or reduced blood flow to the brain.
Dementia with Lewy bodies – associated with changes in movement, alertness, and visual hallucinations.
Frontotemporal dementia – typically affecting personality, decision-making, and language.
Dementia is not a normal part of ageing. Early identification and support are key to living well with the condition.
Recognising the Signs
Common signs of dementia may include:
Forgetting names, appointments, or recent conversations
Difficulty with problem-solving or decision-making
Getting lost in familiar places
Repeating questions or behaviours
Changes in mood or personality
If you notice these signs in yourself or someone you care about, it’s important to speak with a GP as early intervention can make a meaningful difference.
